It is so strange and makes no sense at all. The writing in 99% of anime is pretty bad, and out of the remaining 1% most of it is just meh. First, there's still some social stigma around them, as was already discussed. You may want to avoid those if that's your impression. Furthermore, the fan base of anime is very weird, makes cringy references, and often cannot be compelled to discuss any other topic and enjoy it. It would be like comparing saturday morning cartoons to south park which is targeted to an adult audience. Try watching seinen and josei type of anime. This was my opnion and dbz was tge examole i gave. Web those anime are considered shounen, and is most likely the one you're referring too. A thin line separates stupidly funny jokes from just plain old stupid jokes, but anime has a knack for getting this right.

Animes also weird because the average person doesn’t watch it, and those who do watch it don’t have the balls to admit it or let the world know about it.
